The Overhill Kitchen

LOCATION: BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ
From Cramped to Custom: A Spacious, Light-Filled Kitchen for a Growing Family

In this expansive home, the original kitchen felt disproportionately small—especially for a busy, growing family. Our clients came to us with a clear wishlist: a large island, generous counter space, a large pantry, a dedicated coffee station, and a bright, open layout that seamlessly connected to surrounding rooms.

To achieve this, we expanded the kitchen into the former eat-in breakfast nook, effectively doubling the usable square footage. We also widened the opening to the adjacent dining room, as well as the adjacent living room, creating an open-concept flow that fosters connection and ease of movement—perfect for everyday living and entertaining alike.

With the new, larger footprint, we were able to deliver on every item on our clients’ list—and more. Architectural changes, including relocating windows, allowed for a more functional layout while also bringing in an abundance of natural light.

Our client had a vision of a Modern Farmhouse aesthetic with a personal twist: a bold indigo blue island inspired by her cherished KitchenAid mixer. From that inspiration, we curated finishes that tied the look together—balancing warmth, texture, and simplicity to maintain a bright, airy feel throughout.
